Your $75 check from an on-line gold buyer that took three weeks to receive? It could have been $518 in cold hard cash after a ten minute trip to your local refiner.

Ouch.

It could have been worse. Authorities are hearing complaints that 'hotel' gold buying events have been issuing checks which bounce. Local and national news stories have even made the problem worse - highlighting happy customers taking advantage of the high price of gold by selling their outdated jewelry at 'gold parties'. (See CNBS's 'Gold Rush' article below). These stories have yet to mention that the customers could receive much more money with just a little bit of research.

According to complaintsboard.com, online gold buyers such as cash4gold are gauging customers by sending checks for pennies on the dollar. Even after taking into account that these buyers are basing their offers on intrinsic metal value and not 'resale' value, customers are being paid the equivalent of $150 (or less) per ounce of gold. 3 baller (screen name at onlinecomplaints.com) wrote that he manages 4 pawn shop companies. As a test he sent in nearly an ounce of 14K gold to cash4gold.com. (As 14K equals .585 purity, the amount sent was over half an ounce of pure gold). His check? $72.13. "Gold was selling for $920 an ounce. Our pawn shop would have paid at least $200 for that gold," 3 baller wrote. But even pawn shops pale compared to what refineries would pay - a half ounce of gold commands up to $430 at refineries.

Now the real irony about this situation? Look around the web page you're on right now, and you'll probably see ads for buying your gold, even as we explain that they may not be your best bet.

Josh Fields (fictitious name - real person) had been a reputable jeweler in the Puget Sound area before being recruited to develop 'Gold Buying Events' in Washington state. The company that hired him was a newly created entity out of Florida named Gold Buyers of America (aka Hotelgoldbuyers.com). Just three months after Josh opened 4 hotel locations (South Center to Everett), a few customers returned to voice some serious complaints: their checks had bounced. Josh was furious. He had done all the hiring, obtained the local licenses, and even signed the checks for the company. It was his butt on the line. After ensuring the customers were reimbursed, Josh was told the problem was fixed. It was not. More than 30 bounced checks have surfaced so far. Josh helped out all the customers with problems in his territory, then quit. One of his hotel managers left a week later after encountering even more bounced checks. Their web site indicates that they hotelgoldbuyers.com will continue to do business in the Seattle area this week-end.

Back in February, Josh was pumped about the success of their opening weekend at the Bellevue HIlton, where he and a co-worker purchased $15,000 worth of gold, silver and platinum in just two days - after advertising on local radio and setting up shop in the hotel's board room. During a training session with potential employees, Josh mentioned that the company was able to sell the gold at spot for at least $33,000. Not a bad profit margin. It would be more, he noted, if they culled some of the better jewelry for the resale market before melting it.

The largest customer of that first week-end emptied 3 bags full of old rings, bracelets, dental work, necklaces, and a few coins onto the board room table. He took home a check for $5,000. Of course that same customer could have sold his hoard for $11,000, had he driven a few more miles down the road to Pacific Iron of Seattle, where even the general public gets paid up to 92% of spot value. (And he could have done much worse - had he sent it in to cash4gold).

The bottom line? Most gold buyers want to keep the seller confused about what their jewelry is worth. They'll talk about karats, pennyweight, spot prices, overhead, anything except how much pure gold you have - in ounces. So...

1) Keep it simple. Nail them down to what they are actually offering per ounce of pure gold before you agree to sell.

2) Find out if there is a local refinery which buys old jewelry and scrap precious metals from the public. You should be able to negotiate a price between 90-95% of spot value.

3) If your jewelry has any sentimental or resale value - DON'T SELL IT FOR SCRAP. Most buyers (other than jewelrs) will not give you anything for stones (diamonds, opals, etc.). You would be better off to get a reputable jeweler's appraisal, and then list the item on EBay. Or better yet, (from your children's perspective) hang onto it to pass it down to future generations!

I would strongly suggest checking out the Silver and Gold Exchange before selling gold or silver to ANYONE. I did a great deal of research, online and offline, and learned a lot about this business. I checked pawn shops, jewelers, "gold parties", hotel "buying events as well as the online buyers, including the "as seen on tv" guys. I found that the Silver and Gold Exchange paid more than anyone else I could find. I liked the fact that they post the prices they pay per gram (beware of the places that quote in pennyweight/DWT) on a live price chart at http://SilverAndGoldExchange.com I also checked out their Better Business Bureau report and found they have never had a single complaint as opposed to HUNDREDS of complaints some other companies have! I have a miner who supplies to our refinery, before buying gold in Africa, make sure you know the miner/seller you are dealing with personally, that develops a good relationship and trust. Its always good to start with trial shipment if CIF/FOB. Scammers ask for upfront in tax and shipment, but none of the real miners will ship without upfronts, which makes it difficult for some buyers...I wonder if there is any seller here

Hi all, please take my advise. These are facts!...if you DO NOT heed these few pointers, you WILL lose your money.

1) Forget even attempting to buy gold in Ghana. The only way you can do this is to go into the bush and buy directly from the miners as they come out of the mines!

These come in small quantities, so you will never get more than 1/2 - 5kg per week. There is no gold in Accra, you have been warned.

2) Any offers you see on the internet are fake. The real miners work so damn hard that they will never have time to get on the net posting stupid offers. This is what the scammers do!

3) Any offers that you do see will always have a stupid quantity like 500kg a month or so. Just so you are aware, it takes about 200 people a whole week to get about 1/2 a kg, if they are lucky!

4) The bush market price in Ghana right now from the local galamsey people (miners) works out to about $32/kg (unless you are in a JV with them - but even then, do NOT give money - consider machinery, which you can take back at a moments notice is they start playing around with you), however they wouldn't even have a kg to sell to you. No one holds on to their gold. They are surrounded by middle man buyers (locals) who buy it in bits from a few places to make a few kg's. They will charge you about 5% below LME (minus impurities)

5)Basically to emphasize point 4. You will NEVER get gold at anything less than $31k per kg in Ghana - FACT!!!

6) Only ever buy what you have tested. NEVER do samples. Do NOT fallk for the 'take a sample from the bag and you can lock the box etc etc. They will scam you.

7) They are always one step ahead. Remember they have done it 1000's of times. You will never be cleverer than them

8) PMMC are there to help. These scammers will always always try and convince you the opposite. It is a myth that PMMC will seize your goods as you are not registered. Remember they are also a third party shipper and TOTALLY SAFE!!! They have NEVER EVER messed up.If you ask your seller to bring goods to PMMC to be assayed, they will run a mile if they are fake. Or just not show up - FACT. PMMC will ship the goods to wherever you want for a .5% fee off LME market price on that day of the transaction. They will NOT tell you that the goods have to be bought at LME price less 3%. that is the crap that the scammers feed you so you go with them with their stupidly rediculous low prices. Do NOT fall for it! PMMC will not get involved with the price you have negotiated between you and the seller. They don't care

9)Be very aware of the big one! police arresting you as you drive away with merchandise you have just bought. They ARE FAKE!!! these ar**holes work as a mafia and can harm you, so avoid doing deals outside PMMC

Well thats it for now...please heed my advise. I have been in west Africa for a year now and believe me when I tell you, if you don't heed this advise, you will definately get scammed. There is no such thing as a gold deal off the internet. Don't waste you air fares coming down!...oh...don't believe all the supposed pastors of churches or these people that claim they go to church every sunday, its a cover for thier scams.

Finally, everyone always has a father who is a chief ;-)

By the way...same rules apply for all the other Gold producing West African countries. Please find the official government house for that country and go and see them for their procedures before you do a deal.it will save you.

Hi Rodney. Irrespective of your slight misunderstanding of what PMMC actually buys gold at, you are pretty accurate in your question, so don't get put off from your logic!...A very small portion of miners will sell to you at a slightly reduced price off LME (eg $34k) today because that way they avoid taxes on their profit as that is passed to the licenced buyer (as long as the seller remains anonymous). Also some miners are 'illegal' i.e. Galamsey boys without a PMMC Licence and are afraid their goods will be seized. HOWEVER, there are a lot of local buying spots or local business men that will buy from them, so there is no issues with that.

Do remember that Local business men can drive the prices down by providing 'sponsorship' to these Galamsey boys and gain their loyalty. They will then 'flip' it to the likes of yourself or others, incl. PMMC at the best price they can get. The mistake foreigners make is assuming that these guys lack education. That is foolish. Why would you expect people who have suffered to dig this prized commodity out of the ground to release it to you at less than what it actually is worth? Due to this misconception, it allows the scammers a window to feed on foreigners greed!...on the flip side of that, however...the locals do overprice their product slightly as they don't take into consideration the impurity factor first before quoting LME prices they have just seen on the news that morning. There needs to be a fine balance between the two.

LME prices are based on BULLION and NOT dust!!! (Just a message for locals who read this)...

Consideration needs to be taken in for the impurities AND the cost implications for smelting and refining it into the final marketable product overseas...

Forget buying, people...invest in owning your own mine...everything you dig out is yours!!!

As a price guide, if you went into mining, it would cost you approx $10k to dig out 1kg of gold, which after impurities, would net you a profit of approx $36k...now there's your profit!!! This $10k includes labour, machinery hire, security, fuel etc etc etc

Even if you went 50/50 with the land owner/ chief, you can still get huge profits...Just make sure you check out the ownership of the licences/rights etc before going into it,...but thats another story!!!

Hi Ric,

Unfortunately, myself nor my team have been in Mali, but if you look back to one of my first inputs on this page, you will find that the rules accross West Africa and the procurement of Gold are the same.

Make sure you do not accept 'samples'.

make sure you only buy what you test.

make sure you do this through the official government body in the country (which you should check through your embassy/information board prior to going).

These government bodies will also ship it out for you(like pmmc in Ghana). I have shipped out a lot of gold from PMMC and to date, I have never lost out).

Please be aware of prices. The lower it is, the more likely to be a scam it is.

Basically...only pay once you are 100% sure that all the product is real AND in your posession. Never let anyone touch it on the sellers side, once you have tested it, as they will swap it. Trust me...they are very very very good!!!
